Despite the initial uproar and widespread calls for action following the racial abuse incident at Mestalla Stadium nearly a year ago, Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior continues to face racist abuse in Spain. The Brazilian player, who is Black, recently broke down in tears discussing the insults he has received ahead of an international friendly between Spain and Brazil, set up under the theme "One Skin" to combat racism.

Vinícius’s experience highlights a disturbing trend of racism in Spanish football, where despite some progress, significant steps forward are yet to be taken. Esteban Ibarra, president of the Movement Against Intolerance, Racism and Xenophobia in Spain, acknowledges that while there has been some response, it hasn’t been enough to fully advance the cause.

The persistence of such abuse raises questions about the effectiveness of measures taken by Spanish authorities and football organizations. It also underscores the need for continuous efforts to eradicate racism from sports and society as a whole. As Vinícius bravely stands against racism, his struggle serves as a reminder that the fight is far from over.
